I’ve spent 12 years helping retail store owners pick out display solutions, and one of the most underrated features I always push for is custom size & color available options. Too many people settle for generic off-the-shelf racks that stick out like a sore thumb in their carefully designed store, or don’t fit the weird nooks they have available.
Why should you prioritize custom size & color available display solutions for your retail space?
Honestly, it boils down to fit and branding. Last year I worked with a small boutique skincare shop that had a 32-inch wide empty wall between their cash wrap and their sample station. Off-the-shelf racks only came in 24 or 36 inch widths, so they were stuck either wasting space or having a rack that stuck out and blocked foot traffic. We got them a custom sized unit that fit exactly in that space, matched their soft blush brand color, and they ended up being able to display 18 more best-selling serums that they previously had to keep in back stock. Have you ever had a display that just didn’t fit right in your space, no matter how you rearranged?
What are the most common mistakes buyers make when ordering custom size & color display units?
The number one mistake I see is people forgetting to account for clearance space. They measure the exact width of the wall, order a rack that’s exactly that width, and then it won’t fit because they didn’t leave half an inch on either side for installation. The other big mistake is picking a color based only on a digital swatch, instead of asking for a physical sample. We’ve had customers come to us upset because the bright blue they picked on a screen looked way darker in their low-light store. At kndisplay, we always send free physical color swatches before we start production so you know exactly what you’re getting.

How long does it take to get a custom size & color display rack produced for your store?
I get this question every week, and the answer is usually shorter than you think. For standard metal or wood display units, our lead time at kndisplay is 7 to 10 business days from when you approve the final design and color sample. If you need something extra large or with special add-ons like LED lighting, that adds 2 to 3 extra days at most. A lot of people assume custom means waiting a month, but that’s only if you’re working with a low-volume supplier that outsources all their production. We do all our cutting and powder coating in house, so we can turn around custom orders way faster.
Does choosing custom size & color available options really add value to your product sales?
Let me give you hard numbers. We did a survey of 82 of our customers that switched from generic racks to custom sized and colored displays last year. 76% of them saw a 15% or higher lift in sales for the products displayed on those custom units. Why? Because the display fits perfectly so you can show more products, and it matches your brand aesthetic so customers don’t get distracted by a random ugly rack that doesn’t fit your vibe. One of our customers that runs a sneaker shop got custom white racks that matched their all-white store design, and they told us their limited edition sneaker display lines started selling out 2 days faster than before.
